Our Vision
Our vision is to create a unifying, transformative, community-driven, active space for Kansas Citians to share.
Our Mission
Volker Boulevard weaves along Brush Creek through Kansas City’s urban core, connecting east and west from Paseo Boulevard to the Country Club Plaza. The eastern termination of Volker Boulevard at Paseo is marked by a historic landmark, the well-known yet not often visited Paseo Stairs. The stone steps were built into the steep hillside leading up to the original Paseo High School, and aside from a fresh coat of paint in the 1980s, they haven’t been touched for over 70 years, as is evident in the crumbling stone pavers and overgrown brush in the surrounding site. Our goal is to create a free outdoor fitness destination and multi-purpose site so more Kansas City residents can enjoy the area.
Project Goals
Create a welcoming, multi-functional site that will enhance the lives of our community
Utilizing outdoor fitness as an opportunity to bring the city together and bridge gaps
Promote healthier lifestyles for our community members, which we believe in turn makes our city better as a whole
Enhance the visibility of this historic landmark
Bring all walks of life together, helping to create a vibrancy in this neighborhood that is often overlooked for investment
Bring the community together to support this project and re-energize our neighbors
Our vision for this site includes multiple interactive gathering spaces.
The Veranda could be a place for people to gather and take in the great views of Kansas City.
The Paseo Steps are a noteworthy icon in Kansas City. The function, general dimensions, and slope of the steps should remain the same. However, there are several creative implementations that could improve the user experience on site.
We envision The Loop as an 1/8 mile soft track located near the intersection of Swope Parkway and The Paseo.
The Loop could include fitness stations along the track, featuring a variety of strength training and cardio equipment. The flat open lawns could be perfect for passive activities or pick-up games.
“These stairs are situated in the spine of our city. You see a great deal of diversity, people working out, using these stairs, enjoying them in a safe, fun, manner. This project aims to increase the health and vitality of our community as a whole.”
